School holidays are meant for fun. More playtime, more sport, more snacks, and more time away from routine. It’s also a time when dental emergencies in kids can pop up without warning.
A fall at the playground, a bump during backyard cricket, or a sudden toothache on a day when everything is closed can feel stressful for any parent. If you’re worried about your child’s teeth, it helps to know what constitutes a dental emergency and what to do next.
What Counts as a Kids’ Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any tooth or mouth problem that needs prompt attention to ease discomfort, reduce risk of complications, or protect a tooth.
For children, the most common urgent concerns include tooth pain that won’t settle, swelling, bleeding that doesn’t stop, or an injury to a tooth after a fall or impact. In many cases, acting early can make a real difference.
Common School Holiday Dental Emergencies for Kids
During school holidays, we often see a few issues come up more frequently.
Knocked or chipped teeth
Trips and falls happen, especially around pools, scooters, trampolines, and playgrounds. A front tooth can chip, crack, or get knocked out. Even a small chip can be worth checking, particularly if your child is feeling sensitivity or pain.
Toothache that flares up suddenly
A sore tooth can become more noticeable when routines change. More sugary snacks, missed brushing, or an underlying issue that has been quiet can lead to pain that arrives quickly.
Swollen gums or facial swelling
Swelling around the gums, cheek, or jaw can signal infection or irritation. If your child has swelling, ongoing pain, or is generally unwell, it is a good idea to contact a dentist promptly.
Loose fillings or damaged dental appliances
If your child has a filling, crown, or orthodontic appliance, holiday activities can sometimes knock something loose. Sharp edges can irritate the mouth, and broken pieces may need attention.
“School holidays are when we see the most bumps, falls, and chipped teeth. If your child has tooth pain, swelling, or a dental injury, it’s worth calling sooner rather than later so we can guide you on the next step and book an urgent visit if needed,” says Dr Kishan Keshwara (Dentist).
